HDFC TOP 200 – 2K
HDFC MID CAP OPPOR -2K
HDFC GOLD FUND -2K
HDFC EQUITY FUND-1k
ICICI DISCOVERY GROWTH-1K
Lack of diversification is evident in the portfolio mentioned. 4 out of 5 funds mentioned are equity funds. No exposure to debt funds. In addition to lack of diversification across the asset classes, there is overlap in the stock holdings of the mutual funds mentioned.
HDFC HDFC MID CAP HDFC ICICI DISCOVERY
TOP 200 OPPORTUNITIES EQUITY GROWTH
Giant Cap 55.48% 2.42% 42.69% 16.72%
Large Cap 24.80% 10.71% 22.52% 12.26%
Mid Cap 14.49% 55.62% 25.14% 36.07%
Small Cap 1.12% 31.02% 5.74% 32.09%
Tiny 0.14% 0.25%
So if you look at the portfolio allocation of the mutual funds specified there is a significant degree of overlap among the asset classes. Added to this, the HDFC top 200 almost replicates HDFC Equity and HDFC Midcap opportunities fund is similar to ICICI Discovery growth fund. So there is huge overlap in the securities opted by the different funds specified. The degree of overlap among the funds should be low in order to avoid excessive portfolio management charges.
