Consumer Staples Stock #7: J.M. Smucker (SJM)
J.M. Smucker is a diversified food and beverage company. It owns iconic consumer brands like Smucker's Folgers, Pillsbury, and Bicks. The company features a number of pet food brands.
J.M. Smucker's valuation has become very attractive as the markets has reacted negatively to the company's weak top-line performance. Indeed, the company expects flat sales for fiscal 2018. Adjusted earnings-per-share are expected to rise 6%-8% due to cost cuts and share repurchases.
Consumer Staples Stock #6: Church & Dwight (CHD)
Church & Dwight manufactures personal care and household products. Its major brands include Arm & Hammer and Trojan, among others. Church & Dwight's brand portfolio is a result of a long string of successful acquisitions. In fact, 10 of the company's 11 main brands have been purchased, rather than developed in-house.
Looking ahead, Church & Dwight's two major growth catalysts are international expansion and eCommerce. Ecommerce sales as a percentage of total revenue have increased by 500% over the last 2 years, while the company's international sales increased by 8% last year.
Consumer Staples Stock #5: Vector Group (VGR)
Vector Group is a unique company that essentially combines two unrelated businesses under the umbrella of a holding company. More specifically, the company operates diversified tobacco and real estate businesses. Vector Group generates about 60% of its revenue from tobacco and about 40% from real estate.
The most interesting aspect of Vector Group's investment thesis is its cash returns. Vector Group has paid uninterrupted dividends since 1995. Not only does the company pay a hefty regular dividend (it yields 8.4% right now), but the company also pays a 5% stock dividend each year. Make no mistake - dividend payments will likely form the majority of Vector's total returns for the foreseeable future. Still, the company holds appeal for dividend investors.
Consumer Staples Stock #4: Mondelez International (MDLZ)
Mondelez International was created when Kraft Foods spun off its North American grocery business from tis international business. The grocery business was later merged with Heinz to form Kraft-Heinz, while the international segment continues to operate independently as Mondelez.
Today, Mondelez generates annual revenue of approximately billion, about three-quarters of which comes from outside the United States. Mondelez sells products in 165 countries around the world. Its core brands include Oreo, belVita, Cadbury, Ritz, and Triscuit.
Consumer Staples Stock #3: Kellogg Company (K)
Kellogg is one of the world's best-known dividend growth stocks. The company has paid more than 370 consecutive dividends since 1925.
Lately, though, Kellogg has been struggling with shifting consumer preferences. Cereal sales are declining due to sagging demand among younger generations like Millennials. To respond to this, Kellogg has branched out into new product categories.
This includes several acquisitions, including the .7 billion purchase of Pringles in 2012. Outside of cereal, Kellogg no owns brands like Keebler, CheezIt, and the aforementioned Pringles. If Kellogg's brand repositioning proves successful, then investors who purchased at today's cheap valuations will likely be handsomely rewarded.
Consumer Staples Stock #2: Altria Group (MO)
Altria is the largest cigarette company in the United States. It is responsible for the Marlboro brand of cigarettes, as well as none-smokeable brands like Skoal, Copenhagen, and the Ste. Michelle brand of wine.
There is no doubt among that investing community about the growth prospects of the cigarette industry. They are very poor indeed. With that said, Altria's growth will not come from traditional cigarettes. Instead, the company's non-combustible portfolio - led by its IQOS technology - should be the driver of growth moving forward.
Consumer Staples Stock #1: Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA)
Walgreens is the largest retail pharmacy in both the United States and Europe. The company operates approximately 13,200 stores in 11 countries.
Walgreens' stock price has fallen under pressure for two main reasons. First, falling prices for pharmaceuticals are reducing margins for Walgreens. Second, many investors are wary of the constant threat that Amazon will permanently disrupt Walgreens' business model. These fears were cemented with Amazon's recent acquisition of PillPack.
